Toshiba's Regza GL1 3DTVs going on sale in Japan tomorrow, no glasses required

The panacea of glasses-free 3D displays (or content) might not yet be upon us, but Toshiba's doing its best by putting the two models in its Regza GL1 family up for sale in Japan. Tomorrow marks the debut of the smaller 12GL1, spanning a 12-inch diagonal and offering the unconventional resolution of 466 x 350. That's expected to be priced at ¥120,000 ($1,431), exactly half of the ¥240,000 ($2,863) asking price of the 20GL1, which will follow it swiftly with retail availability on December 25th. The latter display has the decency to come equipped with a more civilized 720p resolution and 550:1 contrast ratio, although, as you can see above, neither panel can be accused of being unnecessarily thin or space-efficient. Still, this parallax barrier stuff is the best we've got for the moment -- and as usual the best we've got resides in Japan only.

Update: The Wall Street Journal reports that Toshiba is planning larger members of this glasses-free 3D family with a panel of over 40 inches in the cards for the company's next fiscal year, which begins in April 2011. More to come at CES in January.

Panasonic's new LCD TVs record video to SDXC

Panasonic's plasma sets get most of the attention, and perhaps rightfully so, but it's actually the company's new LCD lineup for Japan that can help you make use of your woefully neglected SDXC cards. In addition to compiling terrestrial HDTV footage on a standard external hard drive, the Panasonic Viera G3 and X3 can record to a new SD card slot as well, archiving up to five hours of 1080p footage on a 'standard' 64GB SDXC card. We put 'standard' in quotes because while that's presently the typical capacity for that particular designation of flash, it'll still cost you upwards of $200 to get in on the ground floor, and that's a pittance compared to what Panasonic's charging for its own. Who said magnetic storage was dead? If Tokyo's where you hang your hat, expect both the G3 and X3 series to hit stores near you in February of next year.

LG preps 72-inch and mobile ATSC TVs with 3D for CES

LG tonight gave another preview of its CES 2011 mix by showing what it said would be the largest 3D-capable TV yet as well as a portable 3D TV for the new mobile ATSC format. At 72 inches, the LZ9700 is much larger than the previous best 60-inch 3D sets and should provide a more immersive effect. Most details aren't known, but it will have a full 480Hz refresh rate, LED backlighting and LG's usual Internet video and TV app store support.

The mobile TV is a prototype and will support mobile ATSC broadcasts with glasses-free 3D, even at speeds of up to 200km/h (124mph). The chip at the heart of the TV will also find its way elsewhere and will carry a data channel that can be used in smartphones or other devices with two-way control. A demo phone at CES will have a sample feed from local TV station KLAS that will give it coupons from Toyota.

More details will be available for the LZ9700's launch at CES, but the mobile TV technology isn't likely to be made into a shipping product as-is.

Fox Blocks Google TV

Following in the footsteps of NBC, CBS and ABC. Fox Broadcasting today started to block Google TV from accessing its content.

Sources say the main reason for the block by Fox executives is that they thought Google’s “footprint was too small,”. Basically meaning that Google didn’t have enough Google TV customers for the network to make it worth while.

The decision by the broadcasting networks to block Google Tv and other TV services such as Boxee hasn’t gone to well with many tech sites and blogs on the Internet.

Lauren Weinstein blogger and tech activist had this to say about the move: ”Imagine the protests that would ensue if Internet services arbitrarily blocked video only to Internet Explorer or Firefox browsers, or if Hulu and the other networks decided they’d refuse to stream video to HP and Dell computers.”

What are your thoughts on the blocks of both Google TV and Boxee?
